NEIGHBORHOOD GOSSIP

This beauty salon is getting just too crowded for me. What happened to those nice, peaceful afternoons, when there’d be only three or four of us sitting under the dryers, chatting away about our families and all the neighborhood gossip? Now they’ve expanded, they opened up an additional storefront. Now it seems as if the whole WORLD is coming here to get their hair styled. It's almost as if you need event tickets to get your hair done. Some of these women are total strangers. They must be coming from other suburbs to do their hair at Franco’s. It’s amusing to overhear their conversations as I’m drying up. “My husband, you know, he doesn’t do it anymore.” “Well, my husband is having an affair with a twenty-something, but I don’t really care. As long as he stays married to me, I don’t care the slightest.” “My son got a basketball scholarship to Indiana!” “So? My daughter got an English literature scholarship to Smith!” There’s a long pause in the chatter after that. Then they just start right up again…..”Oh, you know, my boyfriend is back betting sports again. He’s putting down $5,000 on the Bears.” “That’s ridiculous. I told my husband he’d better not start in on that kind of thing or I’d leave him. I really would.” “No way, Jeannette. No way you’d leave Dick.” “You wanna make a bet??” Half the women burst into uproarious laughter.
