KIDS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Growing up, everyone used to call one kid around the neighborhood Mole. His real name was actually Matt, but even he used to go around and say, “They call me Brother Mole.” So that’s what I called him too. Everyone knew Mole had some kind of diabetic diet because he needed to cut down on the sugar. I was never completely sure if this was a rumor or not, but I’d heard that his mother had actually died from complications due to diabetes. Of course whenever anyone ever saw Mole he was eating a chocolate bar of some sort. 3 Musketeers, Nestles Crunch, A Twixt bar, whatever. He was constantly eating candy. At his house, he used to hang around in the basement most of the time, which was where his bedroom was. And I’d joke that he’d burrowed down underneath the ground to live. I never even met his father. According to Mole, he was at work somewhere all the time. So it was a lot like Mole lived by himself in a basement apartment and he was only 12. It wasn’t bad though. He had cable, video games, and rarely did anyone bother him.
